Sweet Success Story for Filligans of Donegal

Glenties based artisan food producer, Filligans of Donegal is a sweet success story for the county. Established over twenty years ago by Philip and Sara Moss, Filligans create an award-winning range of jams, marmalades, chutneys, mustards, relishes, oils and dressings. The full range includes 60 different products and each one is handmade in small batches using recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation, or developed through the process of research, experimentation and taste-testing.

From humble beginnings, the Filligans food story started in 1997 when Philip and Sara began making jam, marmalade and chutney for a Dublin craft shop. With the help and support of the Local Enterprise Office, the couple expanded the commercial kitchen beside their home twice before moving to new larger facilities in the local area.

As well as a food service range for cafes, restaurants and hotels, Filligans is also available to purchase from various craft shops, delicatessens and stores throughout Ireland. Earlier this year, Filligans also engaged with Local Enterprise Office to avail of the Trading Online Voucher which seen the Donegal Food Coast member launch its online store.

Director of Filligans, Willie Cremen says the online shop is a fantastic development for the Donegal company: “We are delighted to be able to sell online directly to our customers. We only launched last week and have already had sales from Ireland and the UK, with additional queries from customers in Europe and the US. Our products range from traditional flavours to contemporary tastes to give our customers a tantalising food experience with every bite. In addition to launching our online store this year, we also began exporting our Filligans Mustards range into the American market. It is an extremely exciting time for the business as we continue to grow into these new markets.”

The Donegal company is also no stranger to the hall of fame and has picked up various awards and accolades through the decades for its ranges. They won Best Food Coast member in the 2019 Local Enterprise Office Donegal Awards and won Best Preserves in the Georgina Campbell Irish Breakfast Awards 2020. Most recently Filligans won Bronze for its Silkie Irish Whiskey Marmalade in the Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards and the collaboration product between Filligans and Sliabh Liag Distillers also won a star in the Great Taste Awards in September.

After a challenging and busy summer, the team at Filligans now turn their attention to the Christmas gifting season. Willie said: “This is the first year that we will be able to offer our customers an online delivery service and we have just launched our new Filligans Christmas Gift Packs. These are ideal for food lovers, which can be personalised with any of our range to suit different tastes. After a tough year on every business, it is vital that we support local, champion green and buy Irish this year.”
